  1. This archive contains release 1.4d of BibDB, an interactive database
  2. manager for files in the BibTeX format. BibDB is currently at 13500
  3. lines of Pascal code, and is rapidly approaching the limit where it is
  4. too complex for me to adequately comprehend. Therefore, note the following:

  6. 1) I encourage people to let me know what they think of the program, and
  7. to report on bugs, incompatibilities or suggestions. However, I an not
  8. likely in the near future to devote too much time to the program. Therefore,
  9. I will try to correct any bugs, but major new features will have to wait.
  10. Also, note that it is not my intent to develop BibDB into a
  11. full fledged general database program - there are plenty of such programs
  12. around, while BibDB is devoted to the specific purpose of maintaining BibTeX
  13. and BibTeX-like files. I am not getting paid for this, you know.

  15. 2) There are substantial changes to the code in this version. Therefore, I
  16. can't guarrantee that BibDB will not unexpectedly mangle your files.
  17. Both the sorting algorithm and the multilingual support are quite intricate,
  18. and bugs are a definite possibility. So, be careful, and note that I consider
  19. the whole world to be my beta tester :-)

  21. 3) I have received many queries concerning porting BibDB to various other
  22. platforms, mainly Windows 3.x and Unix. My response is the following.
  23. First of all, currently BibDB exists for DOS only, with some additional
  24. support built in for Windows and DESQview DOS boxes. I personally know
  25. nothing about programming for Unix or for X-Windows, and so am not likely
  26. to consider such a port myself. As for a port to Windows, it is probably
  27. not that difficult (using Borland's Turbo Pascal for Windows)
  28. but again will take up more time than I currently have available.
  29. However, if any enterprising person out there is willing to try to do a
  30. port, I will be more than happy to cooperate with him/her. Just note that
  31. BibDB is written in Turbo Pascal 6.0, not in C.
